A few members of the iDirect Market Development team are over in Barcelona this week for the 2013 Mobile World Congress. This is the largest global tradeshow for the mobile communications industry with over 70,000 attendees. On display is the latest in mobile technology from handsets, to infrastructure to the latest in mobile application development. There are also some very interesting “futuristic” technologies that we will see in years to come as the devices that surround us become even more connected.

From the satellite side of things, our own Richard Deasington presented in the Small Cells Forum booth today on the positive business case for small cells and satellite backhaul. His session generated a good amount of interest and helped to educate mobile operators about the strong pairing of small cells and high throughput capacity using satellite for remote and rural connectivity. The iDirect Evolution X1 Outdoor Router is also on display in the small cells forum booth and pairs nicely with a number of the outdoor small cells that are being highlighted at the show.

Aside from presenting we are also finding time to meet with some of the industry partners that we work with like Ericsson, ip.access, Alcatel Lucent and Altobridge to further develop opportunities and learn about some of their new offerings that will help meet the growing demand for voice and data services in remote and rural areas.

Satellite will definitely play a role in the future connectivity requirements for 2G, 3G and even 4G networks as the move to small cells will open up thousands of potential sites that can’t be cost effectively backhauled using traditional backhaul technologies like fiber or microwave. This show is great for looking at the future direction of the mobile industry and the expanded way connectivity will impact our lives.

This paper looks at the market drivers for satellite backhaul, compares the different technologies available and explores new solutions that are changing the pricing model to make satellite more affordable for mobile operators.
