So, it pays to check your spa filter once or twice monthly.

This is because your hot tub filter is made of a fibrous material that gradually loosens over time creating ever-larger spaces for particles to push through and gunk up your pump. Usually they have one side panel opens up to access all the innards of the unit, often behind any steps if it has them. Open that up and most will be obvious. It will have a water valve if it is self filling. Probably even a timer to turn on the water filter and/or keep it warm.
